What is unique about your program? |
|
| |
The residency provides a firm grounding in the pathophysiology of surgical disease and trauma, with the necessary basic science instruction to understand the metabolic, hemodynamic, respiratory, and other systemic responses to illness, surgery and trauma. Surgical diagnosis is emphasized at the beginning of the program. Night float exists at most locations, and 1:1 apprenticeships are utilized during each PGY year. We believe that early experience in the operating room teaches residents the essentials of surgical technique. Skills curricula are offered at all levels. A PGY-1 skills curriculum in the skills laboratory focuses on instruction in intravenous catheter, central line, and suturing skills among others. Senior residents gain very robust exposure to surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery. In addition to providing an excellent education, the residency is located in the heart of Chicago, which offers a fine lakefront as well as a wide variety of civic and cultural events.
